Atticus and The Trial

When the people in the balcony stood up for Atticus, they did it to pay thier respect for him defending Tom Robinson even though the trial was unfair and biased. It felt nice that the people in the balcony appreciated his efforts. Winning a battle when you know you are wrong means you feel guilty about not doing the right thing. Losing a battle when you know you're right shows that you tried to do the right thing.

I had a somewhat similar situation about a touchy subject. I was in a thread that was discussing evolution and intelligent design. When I decided to post, I stopped myself because I relized it would be pointless trying to change other peoples opinion.
